Sarah, over at Budding Gardener has just posted a fantastic review. I’ve quickly become a fan of her blog and writing style, so if you click over there to see the review, be sure to go back and read her other posts.
In a word, this book is fantastic. Seriously. I have been stretching for a long time (think decades). As a result, I am pretty darn flexible. Or so I thought. This book introduced me to spots I didn’t know stretched (parts of my face, for example), and provided me with examples of something most other stretching instruction I have received completely lacked:
How to breathe.
I didn’t count, but I am guessing there are over 200 different stretches in this book. It begins with a discussion of the basic terms of stretching and moves from there into a brief discussion of stretching styles. And when I say brief, I mean brief… just a couple of pages. But that’s ok - this book is not meant to be a comprehensive guide to all things stretching. It’s mean to get you started, the right way.

A new, and very much appreciated review has been posted on Amazon. Thanks Marcia!
Throughout most of my life (pregnancies, stressful times, very busy times, etc.), I have turned to the practice of stretching to help me maintain a sense of feeling somewhat physically fit. I used to exercise alot and always used stretching before and after activities to prevent unnecessary discomfort, pain or injury from keeping me down. Now that I am a very busy mother and nursing student, stretching is a “rescue” for me that allows me to maintain flexibility and strength for the somewhat rare times I get to participate in moderate to strenuous exercise.
This book is great as it lays the groundwork for why we should stretch, gives you the mechanics of how to stretch and provides detailed information on particular focused stretching routines in the “Niche Stretching” section. I especially like the bonus information provided in the “stretch maximizer” boxes found throughout the book and the illustrations are excellent for us visual learners.
I plan to recommend this book to patients in my future nursing practice.

Now here’s a great endorsement for stretching; “I asked him, What is the key to longevity? He gave me a one-word answer: stretching.”
I struck up a conversation with the elderly gentleman and found myself chatting with none other than Bert Morrow. Mr. Morrow STARTED hurdling at age 69! At some point in the conversation, I asked him, “What is the key to longevity?” He gave me a one-word answer: stretching. We talked more about stretching for a while, among other topics, but that one word impacted me and has stayed with me ever since. It’s so simple, but so often overlooked.
